Oracle XE Install Memory Issue
I downloaded and installed Oracle XE Beta 2 on my laptop yesterday and ran into a rather interesting 'feature'. The application checks for a minimum of 240MB of RAM before allowing the install. My laptop was reporting 224MB as 32MB was shared with the graphics. After posting on OTN a workaround solution was tried which was to change the BIOS setting of the graphics memory to 16MB. Do the install and then change it back to 32MB. This seems to have worked but I will let you know what the performance is like in the coming weeks. The full thread is

Secondly during the install I found that it would 'hang' at the creating service part. Apparantly this is a known issue for win xp with one or two different possible solutions. The way I handled it was to go into the services menu and select the oracleXETNSListener and set it to manual. Then reboot the PC and do a fresh install wihtout cleaning up the old one. Another option Oracle recommend is to do the install when you have some other processor intensive activity going on! I got this info from

Thanks Danny. I'll try this out and definitely let you know.
No problem, it is XE specific, but im sure from what you say that your problem is a similar one. Also the tns listener for enterprise might be named differently.
I finally got past the beta issue (it took so many iterations, I am not even sure how i did it. Started installing the Production version. It has found a new place to hang ... the configuring database section. Thanks for your link to the forum. I was so sure the issue had something to do with my 10g EE uninstall that I did not even bother checking the forum. In my defence, I have known to be stupid before ;-)
